Engineering design of a 3-storey apartment block for Clwyd Alyn HA in Colwyn Bay
Datrys provided the civil and structural engineering design for the development. The key challenge was the constrained site which was widened by filling which was supported by a reinforced earth retaining wall over a deep batter.
The structure was of load bearing masonry supporting long span hollowcore floors. The foundations were of reinforced concrete ground beams carried on CFA piles. A critical consideration was the potential for the piling rig to cause local failure of the reinforced earth and Datrys designed the piling platform to control this risk.
The external works included a large planar soakaway which was located at the north boundary of the site away from the filled batter. The narrow access to the site also required the introduction of a controlled access in agreement with Conwy CBC Highways.
