Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974
THE HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY OF DATRYS IS:-

  • to provide adequate control of the health and safety risks arising from our work activities, in terms of our own processes and our output;
  • to consult with our employees on matters affecting their health and safety;
  • to provide and maintain safe plant and equipment;
  • to ensure safe handling and use of substances;
  • to provide information, instruction and supervision for employees;
  • to ensure all employees are competent to do their tasks, and to give them adequate training;
  • to prevent accidents and cases of work-related ill health;
  • to maintain safe and healthy working conditions; and
  • to review and revise this policy as necessary at regular intervals.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Health and Safety Policy of Datrys is:-:

RESPONSIBILITIES

Overall and final responsibility for health and safety is that of: Paul Williams All employees have to:

  • co-operate with supervisors and managers on health and safety matters;
  • not interfere with anything provided to safeguard their health and safety;
  • take reasonable care of their own health and safety; and
  • report all health and safety concerns to an appropriate person (as detailed in this policy statement).

HEALTH & SAFETY RISKS ARISING FROM OUR WORK ACTIVITIES

  • Risk assessments will be undertaken by: Josh Smart
  • The findings of the risk assessments will be reported to: Paul Williams
  • Action required to remove/control risks will be approved by: Paul Williams
  • Ann Mason will be responsible for ensuring the action required is implemented.
  • The findings of the risk assessments will be communicated to all staff by: Ann Mason
  • The success of measures to control risks will be monitored by: Josh Smart
  • Assessments will be reviewed every twelve months or when the work activity changes, whichever is soonest.The employees of Datrys frequently undertake tasks described as ‘Designer Duties’ under the CDM regulations, which affect the safety of others. All designers are made aware of their duties. The Project Manager and Project Director are responsible for ensuring that design hazards are subject to a sufficient and suitable risk assessment, and that design details are prepared which eliminate risk where it is practical to do so. The recent changes to the CDM Regulations will be communicated to staff by a briefing note derived from the Approved Code of Practice. Staff who have direct responsibility under the CDM Regulations as Designers or Co-ordinators will receive formal internal training.

CONSULTATION WITH EMPLOYEES

CONSTRUCTION (DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT) REGULATIONS

  • The Employee representative is George Voulgarelis
  • Consultation with employees is provided by quarterly meetings.

SAFE EQUIPMENT          

  • Josh Smart will be responsible for identifying all equipment needing maintenance and for ensuring effective maintenance procedures are drawn up.
  • Ann Mason will be responsible for ensuring that all identified maintenance is implemented.
  • Any problems found with equipment should be reported to Josh Smart.
  • The procedure will be reviewed every 12 months.

SAFE HANDLING AND USE OF SUBSTANCES

  • Josh Smart will be responsible for identifying all substances which need a COSHH assessment including any new substances to be purchased.
  • Josh Smart will be responsible for undertaking COSHH assessments.
  • Ann Mason will be responsible for ensuring that all actions identified in the assessments are implemented.
  • Josh Smart will be responsible for ensuring that all relevant employees are informed about the COSHH assessments.
  • Assessments will be reviewed every twelve months or when the work activity changes, whichever is soonest.

INFORMATION, INSTRUCTION AND SUPERVISION

  • The Health and Safety Law poster is displayed in the kitchen.
  • Health and Safety advice is available from Josh Smart.
  • Supervision of young workers/trainees will be arranged / undertaken / monitored by Paul Williams.
  • Project Managers are responsible for ensuring that employees working at locations under the control of other employers, are given relevant health and safety information.

COMPETENCY FOR TASKS AND TRAINING

  • Induction training will be provided for all employees by Paul Williams
  • Job specific training will be provided by attendance at relevant courses provided by outside bodies and internally as appropriate
  • Specific jobs requiring special training are: First aiders and those people with health and safety responsibilities
  • Training records are kept on the personnel files
  • Training will be identified, arranged and monitored by Paul Williams.

SELECTION AND CONTROL OF CONTRACTORS

  • All sub-contractors will be expected to achieve at least the same standards as employees of Datrys.
  • Only sub-contractors who can demonstrate their competence by way of certification and experience will be appointed.
  • The performance of sub-contractors will be monitored and those failing to meet the required standard will be removed from projects.
  • Sub-contractors will be informed of Health and Safety risks relating to specific projects before commencement of tasks.
  • When the sub-contractor has to carry out work unsupervised onsite, they are required to submit risk assessments and method statements for tasks to be undertaken.

ACCIDENTS, FIRST AID AND WORK-RELATED ILL HEALTH

  • Health surveillance is required for employees doing the following jobs: VDU users.

MONITORING

  • Owen Bracegirdle is responsible for ensuring the fire risk assessment is undertaken and implemented.
  • Escape routes are checked by Owen Bracegirdle every day
  • Fire extinguishers are maintained and checked every twelve months by Snowdonia Fire Protection.
  • Alarms are tested by Owen Bracegirdle every week. Emergency evacuation will be tested every six months.
  • To check our working conditions and ensure our safe working practices are being followed in compliance with the above headings, we will monitor our performance and record it in the minutes of the quarterly office meetings.
  • Paul Williams is responsible for investigating accidents.
  • Paul Williams is responsible for investigating work-related causes of sickness absences.
  • Josh Smart is responsible for acting on investigation findings to prevent a recurrence.
